Blue Cross/Blue Shield Update
October 15, 2015

A few weeks ago, there was an article in the Albuquerque Journal stating that BC/BS would no longer offer insurance to people on the New Mexico Exchange (Obama Care). The Exchange makes health insurance available to the uninsured populace in New Mexico and in many states in our nation.

This article created some concern among many retirees in the RHCA. It was interpreted by some, that BC/BS would no longer be available or offer coverage to retirees and dependents enrolled in the Retiree Health Care Authority. This is not the case. BC/BS continues to offer health insurance services to folks in the Retiree Health Care Authority and will do so into the future.

The only scenario in which the BC/BS would not offer their program is if the Retiree Health Care Authority terminated the contract with them. If this were to happen, another carrier would be selected that would offer coverage that was better or more advantageous to the Retiree Health Care Authority and their retirees.
